When does your Surface support life cycle end? Will it get fixed?

Time was you could go to Microsoft’s website and get a definitive answer as to when your Surface machine’s support life cycle would end. For reasons unknown, that information isn’t where it used to be. It’s an open question whether Microsoft has unilaterally withdrawn support — a particularly important question, given the ultimate availability of Meltdown/Spectre patches. Let’s say you have a Surface Pro 2 and you want to know if Microsoft will ever fix the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerability on your…

SAMSUNG HW-MS750 SOUND+ SOUNDBAR REVIEW: GREAT FOR MUSIC, BUT YOU’LL WANT THE OPTIONAL SUB FOR MOVIES

Samsung’s flagship soundbar, the MS750 Sound+, knocked my socks off with its musicality. It sounded so utterly spectacular for the price—less than $450 on Amazon at the time of my review—that I wondered why Samsung bothered to ship its optional wireless subwoofer along with it. But then I watched a few movies. The deeply satisfying bass response the speaker delivers solo is much less impressive with movies. On the bright side, Samsung is currently offering an even deeper discount on its companion…

VAVA DASH CAM REVIEW: GREAT VIDEO AND GROUND-BREAKING FEATURES

Vava’s Dash Cam is stylish, cleverly designed, and it offers at least two features that are unique in the dash cam world as far as we know: 360-degree rotation on its magnetic-coupling, and enough battery on board to capture in parking mode for up to 72 hours. It’s also on-trend with the latest features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, iOS and Android apps, and a separate Bluetooth snapshot button (press it to capture stills) that can be placed anywhere in your…

GIGABYTE AERO 15X REVIEW: THE GEFORCE GTX 1070 MAX-Q MAKES IT HUM

Gigabyte’s new Aero 15X says conventional wisdom is wrong. That conventional wisdom says gaming laptops can’t be good “laptops” because they’re too big and eat too much battery. The Aero 15X proves otherwise, with great gaming performance and great battery life. If the Aero 15X looks familiar, that’s because it’s mostly just an upgraded copy of the Aero 15. We absolutely loved the Aero 15, which set the standard for performance and battery life, and the 15X adds to that success.…

RAVPOWER 24W DUAL USB CAR CHARGER REVIEW: AN INEXPENSIVE AND COMPACT OPTION

There’s something to be said about a minimal design, especially when it comes to car chargers. Device makers have to safely cram components into a tight space, without taking up more room than is needed. That’s what RAVPower did with the 24W Dual USB car charger ($9 on Amazon). Note: This review is part of our roundup of USB car chargers. Go there for details on how we tested this device. The charger snuggly fits into a vehicle’s power adapter, and doesn’t stick…

ONEPLUS 5T REVIEW: A $500 MID-RANGE PHONE WITH THE HEART OF A $900 FLAGSHIP

If the OnePlus 5T isn’t a “flagship killer,” it’s at least a “flagship bruiser.” It’s remarkable how much phone OnePlus has managed to deliver for $500, just $20 more than the OnePlus 5. The camera might be a step below those of its premium peers, and the 1080p display isn’t as sharp as Samsung’s Quad HD ones, but the 5T is nothing less than a tremendous upgrade and value. Where last year’s 3T was a mere spec refresh, the 5T upgrades the…

ORIGIN EVO15-S REVIEW: A PORTABLE, POWERFUL MAX-Q LAPTOP THAT DOES EVERYTHING RIGHT

Say hello to one of the most intriguing high-end incarnations of Nvidia’s new Max-Q technology. The Origin EVO15-S is powerful and portable, delivering GeForce GTX 1070 graphics in a sleek sub-five-pound frame. That’s amazing—but it’s also true of every Max-Q gaming laptop. Origin stands out from the crowd with a superb out-of-the-box customer experience and the ability to configure the EVO15-S hardware any way you see fit, unlike the overwhelming majority of the Max-Q masses. More importantly, you can use this gaming laptop…

Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 845 With 4K HDR Video Capture

Qualcomm just launched new Always Connected PCs with Snapdragon 835 processors, but the company isn’t resting on its laurels. It’s also announced the upcoming Snapdragon 845, and a bevy of improvements to go along with it. The company hasn’t said much about the CPU core itself, which is almost certainly based on the same Cortex-A73 technology that Qualcomm debuted with the Snapdragon 835. While 10nm refinements and another design pass could improve clock speeds or reduce power consumption, I wouldn’t expect a huge…

Four papers from CSIR, ICAR labs retracted for fake peer reviews

The journal publisher Frontiers has retracted four papers from NIIST and CTCRI, which are Thiruvananthapuram-based CSIR and ICAR labs respectively, once it found evidence of fake peer reviews. Routine check on a manuscript submitted by the researchers from these labs led to the discovery of faking the peer-review process. While the manuscript was rejected, it also led to further scrutiny of all papers published by them and retraction of four papers. On November 17, four papers published by researchers from Thiruvananthapuram-based…

Pixel Buds are the coolest thing to come from Google’s event

Google’s event yesterday had an announcement for just about everyone, whether you’re a smartphone enthusiast or maybe just looking for an inexpensive (or really expensive) smart speaker. But after the announcements of everything we were expecting to see, Google had a few last minute accessory announcements that, for me, ended up making the event a pleasant surprise. Over the past decade, there have been a number of times where I’ve thought to myself, “We are truly living in the future.” That phrase always sounded weird to me…

Github launches new tools to say when your project’s dependencies get pwned

Github today announced the introduction of more robust security features for its users, which will help developers identify vulnerable dependencies in their code. The announcement came at the company’s flagship Github Universe conference, taking place at Pier 70 in San Francisco. The new feature, called Dependency Graph, enumerates the software libraries that constitute a project. This information is then visualized in a way that’s easy for developers to digest, giving them an accurate overview of their codebase. Github intends to build…

Quickly add the Google Play store to your new Amazon Fire 10HD

Last time I bought an Amazon tablet adding the Google store was a real pain! It takes about 3 minutes and one reboot on the new Amazon Fire HD 10. In order to get the most out of my new 7th generation Amazon Tablet, I needed the Google Play store. GMail, Chrome and a few other apps were not available via Amazon’s walled garden. Used to be Amazon made this hard. Now it is very easy! To add the Google Play store follow these steps:…
