The built-in app store on the Amazon Fire TV Stick is convenient but limited. If you want to expand your choice, you can install the Google Play Store onto the device.
It doesn’t offer all the apps available on the main Google Play Store but will increase the number of VPNs, for example, or file managers at your disposal on the Fire Stick.
Install Google Play on an Amazon Fire TV Stick
Go to Settings on your Amazon Fire TV Stick and open Developer Options.
In order to install files and apps from stores and locations outside the Amazon Fire Stick software, you need to effectively give the Fire Stick permission to do so. This also means that you accept the risks involved, which include a higher chance of installing malware from third-party, dodgy apps that haven’t been vetted by Amazon or Google.
Click to enable Apps from Unknown Sources and ADB Debugging.
Download and install a file manager (in this example we’ve chosen ES File Explorer) from the built-in Amazon App Store.
You now need to download and install four separate APK files to install Google Play on your Amazon Fire TV Stick. These are listed below: Google Services Framework, Google Account Manager, Google Play Servicesand Google Play Store.
To add each APK file to ES File Explorer, press the plus icon and copy and paste the links above. Select the option to download the file and then install each one. This will install the Google Play Store to your Amazon Fire TV Stick and the store will appear as an app in the Applications menu.
